Five Things to Know Before Starting a Food Blog

Share

Food blogs are more popular than they ever were, but this overwhelming popularity does not mean you shouldn’t start one of your own. Whether you’re a well-trained Washington DC foodie or just want to share your family recipes with the world, embrace your ability to share. Consider starting a food blog.

It has never been easier for average people to publish their own content. Today, you don’t need a journalism degree or a team of IT professionals or access to the best restaurants. All you need is a joy of writing, a love of food, and a little creativity. Before starting your blog, consider these five things:

1) Decide what you want to write about.

Is your blog going to be about restaurant reviews or do-it-yourself kitchen hacks and recipes? Make sure you decide what you want your blog to be before starting the building process.

2) Images are important.

These days, everyone loves “food porn.” Make sure you get a good camera or a phone that takes high-resolution images. Learn how to use your cameras features to maximize its potential.

3) Learn the technical aspects.

Sites like WordPress are fairly easy to navigate in order to build out your ideal blog. Watch a few how-to videos online to learn the basics. With a couple hundred bucks and a little time to learn the ropes, you’ll be up and running in no time.

4) Make sure you distribute the content you publish.

You might write the best reviews of Virginia’s restaurants, but in order to get your blog read, you have to get it out there. Publish your blog posts on social media sites like Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and more.

5) Don’t be discouraged.

Traffic takes time. The more content you publish, the better the chances your blog will be found. Still, be happy that you’re making your mark – no matter who is reading it. If you’re doing it for the love of blogging, that satisfaction can be greater than any monetary benefits. Just keep writing!
