For millions of Americans, grilled cheese sandwiches are a staple food item, and comfort food of the highest order. Many people have special memories of eating grilled cheese sandwiches when they were children, and most have specific ways that the sandwich “must” be prepared in order for it to be perfect. Still, although many love the classic grilled cheese sandwich, few know its origins. The quest for how to make the best grilled cheese sandwich is real, and knowing the history behind it is a fun added bonus.

Where Did the Grilled Cheese Sandwich Come From?

For thousands of years, people have been indulging in cheese. However, it wasn’t until around 1914 that Kraft & Bros began producing what was then known as “factory cheese”. This cheese product was cheap to make, easily produced, and readily available, at a price that most people could afford. In short order, people began pairing the mass-produced cheese with soft, white bread.

In 1965, the food item that is commonly known today as the grilled cheese sandwich began growing in popularity. These early versions of the grilled cheese sandwich remain very popular today, and consisted of two slices of white bread, with one or two Kraft Singles slices in between the bread. The sandwiches didn’t officially become known as the “grilled” cheese sandwich until the late sixties. Other publications or cooking journals had referred to the sandwich as “melted cheese sandwiches” or even “toasted cheese sandwiches”. No matter how you prepare it, the name stuck, and to this day, the cheese and bread combo is known as the grilled cheese sandwich.

No Shortage of Grilled Cheese Sandwich Options

Perhaps one reason for the instant popularity of the grilled cheese sandwich is how easy they are to prepare, as well as customize. Over the years, fans of the combination have added a wide variety of other ingredients in with the sliced cheese before heating it all up. A few favorite additions include pickles, avocados, olives, jam, and mustard.

Some have chosen to go truly gourmet or out-of-the-box with their grilled cheese sandwiches, adding chocolate or other sweet flavors to the sandwich. When choosing what to eat the sandwich with, the possibilities are truly endless. A grilled cheese sandwich is delicious on its own, but pairing it with a bowl of hearty tomato soup makes for a comfort food treat that cannot be beaten. For a light lunch, grilled cheese with chips or fruit is also a winning combo.

Delicious Grilled Cheese Made Easy

Everyone has their own favorite way to prepare a grilled cheese sandwich. Many love making them on the stove, which allows for maximum cheese meltiness as well as perfectly toasty bread. Still, when you are making sandwiches for several people, it can be time-consuming. There is a simple solution, however – preparing grilled cheese in a combi oven is a surprisingly easy way to make multiple sandwiches.

To make grilled cheese in a combi oven, simply line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Spread softened butter on one side of each piece of bread and place the bread, butter side down, on the baking sheet. Then, layer the cheese on the bread, as well as any other toppings. Finish building the sandwiches by putting on the top piece of buttered bread, and stick the tray in the combi oven for 2-5 minutes. Make sure to watch the sandwiches closely to ensure that they don’t burn. When they are golden brown, pull the tray from the oven and serve up the perfectly crispy, melty, grilled cheese sandwiches!
